The Athlete — 56 × 81 cm (22 × 32 in)

Edward Penfield — c. 1907

The Work

A broad-shouldered football player stands almost frontally, his dark jersey expanding into a single monumental shape. Penfield reduces the figure to bold contours, flat colour and exaggerated mass, giving the image a graphic directness that feels both athletic and modern. The work captures physical strength through simplicity rather than detail.
