Still Life with Turkey — 76 × 97 cm (30 × 38 in)

Theo van Hoytema

The Work

A dead turkey hangs vertically against a nearly black ground, its pale feathers rendered with energetic, directional marks. The inverted body turns the familiar bird into something almost sculptural, with the wings spreading into an irregular mass of light against darkness. The stark contrast gives the work a dramatic presence somewhere between natural study and still life.
