Charles Demuth — 1915

The Work

A domestic room becomes a restless network of furniture, figures, animals and objects. Demuth works with quick graphite-like lines and translucent washes of orange, yellow, blue and black, allowing forms to overlap rather than settle into conventional perspective. A reclining nude dominates the upper right while chairs, cats, fruit and scattered objects make the room feel observed in fragments. The result is intimate, humorous and deliberately unstable.
