Perseus, 1904 — 86 × 97 cm (34 × 38 in)
Paul Klee — 1904
The Work
Klee transforms the classical hero Perseus into something strange, sharp and psychologically charged. Enlarged eyes, compressed features and fragmented forms replace the idealised beauty traditionally associated with mythological subjects. The image feels both humorous and unsettling, using distortion as a way to turn the heroic figure into something more human and cerebral.
